Feeling hot? So is Earth. Because of problems like climate change and bad ways of farming, much of the planet’s land is drying up. What can we do to solve this problem?
One thing the United Nations did was to create a holiday. In 1994, the UN started World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (世界防治荒漠化和干旱日), to let more people know about desertification. It is on June 17 every year.
Desertification happens when healthy land — land full of water and nutrients (营养)— becomes desert, which is dry and unhealthy. Every year, 20,000 to 50,000 square kilometers of Earth’s land is lost to desertification. In Africa, scientists expect that two thirds of Africa’s healthy land will be lost by 2025.
Desertification sometimes happens because of climate change, as big, fast changes in temperature can kill plants and trees.
However, it also happens because people use land too much, and in bad ways, to grow food on their farms. Growing too many plants in the same soil, in too short a time, can take away the soil’s nutrients faster than the soil can make new ones. That can turn the soil into dry sand, like a desert.
The UN suggests some different actions to stop desertification. One is to teach people better ways of farming, including the use of better fertilizers (肥料). Another is reforestation which means planting more trees. One country that has done a lot of that is China. Today China has 61 million hectares of reforested land — more than anywhere else in the world.
35.What is land like if desertification happens?
A.It is full of water. B.It has more nutrients.
C.It is dry and unhealthy. D.It is suitable to live on.
36.What do scientists predict about Africa in 2025?
A.Growing plants will help Africa have more healthy land.
B.Most of Africa’s healthy land will get dry and unhealthy.
C.Africa will have about 50,000 square kilometers of healthy land.
D.Africa will have about 20,000 square kilometers of desertification.
37.Why isn’t it good to grow too many plants in the same soil?
A.Because it can change the climate faster.
B.Because it can change plants into bad soil.
C.Because it can change healthy land into forests.
D.Because it can take away the soil’s nutrients faster.
38.Which of the following does not cause desertification?
A.Reforestation. B.Using land too much.
C.Using poor fertilizers. D.Climate change.
39.What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.The causes of desertification. B.The importance of reforestation.
C.The UN’s plans for improving farming. D.The UN’s suggestions for fighting desertification.
As a teenager, you may sometimes feel helpless when having problems with your parents. Chen Zanzao, a 17-year-old boy from Shenzhen, has created a charity community called Dear Theodosia to offer professional help to families facing similar issues. It now has 2000 regular participants(定期参与者).
Chen’s idea was inspired(启发) by the three-child policy. “My friend Sina and I thought it would bring problems like parental favoritism(父母偏心),” Chen said. “Most families still don’t know any methods to deal with this.”
They started to research both scientific parenting styles and people’s needs. They read a lot of literature and studies on the topic and surveyed more than 1,000 people. They found that the most effective and healthy family relationships are when parents are highly engaged(参与的) in their children’s lives.
They then founded the community to promote(推广) the idea. “We hold lectures and discussions as well as go on radio and TV programs to promote useful information,” Chen said.
Chen and his friend Sina would do one-to-one conversations with people who felt self-conscious(难为情的) about sharing their stories. “It’s understandable that at first they need time to trust us since we are so young,” Chen said. “But listening is the key.”
“We met many parents saying, ‘I never realized raising a child would be so difficult’, so I think it’s really important that parents should think over whether they could take the responsibility before they rush into anything.”
40.What made Chen Zanzao start the charity community called Dear Theodosia?
A.He wanted to collect methods to solve his family problems.
B.He was once supported by a charity community.

41.In what way does Chen help many parents?

B.He holds one-to-one conversations with people and gives advice.
C.He helps self-conscious people speak about their stories in public.
D.He gives lectures to children about how to listen carefully to parents.
42.What advice might Chen give to those planning to be parents?
A.Worrying enough can help them become good parents.
B.They should be responsible for everything their children do.
C.They should fully consider whether they are ready to have a child.
D.They should raise more children though it’s more difficult for them.
If you step into a bookstore, you might notice shelves labeled (标记为) “self-help” that are filled with rows of books. Self-help books are typically written by famous people and psychologists. They teach you how to deal with problems in your life — for example, how to manage your time well and how to find happiness.
Paul Sweetman, the owner of City Books in the UK, said the current political climate (政治环境), the world has seen terrorist attacks (恐怖袭击), trade wars and woman’s rights movements (女权运动).
“People come into the shop and they’re really tired about things. They’re looking for reassurances and peace of mind,” Sweetman told Guardian.
In addition, younger readers — such as millennials, or people born after the 1980s — tend to be more aware of their own faults.
Self-help books used to be something people laughed at. Many people didn’t take “chicken soup” stories or “success theory (成功学)”books seriously. But now they’re more respected and “as good to read as any novel,” Sweetman said.
Whatever the reason for the growing interest in self-help books might be, it’s good to know that help is at hand if we need it. But are these books really helpful? Read one and find out.

A.how to lose weight
